MAIN AUDITORIUM REAR GROUND FLOOR WALL

In March 2021, our Main Auditorium became more than just a venue - it was the canvas for an extraordinary partnership exhibition.

Hosting the Scottish Furniture Makers Association alongside Visual Arts Scotland for Adjust/Adapt 21, our walls served as the perfect backdrop, enhancing the beauty of bespoke pieces against the charmingly distressed chalky white plasterwork.

Fast forward to May 2, 2023, when attention turned to this very area of the auditorium. MacFadyen Preservation Ltd began the work, with a spotlight on the wall that once showcased artists' work.

The process started with concerns for safety.

As investigations unfolded, it became clear that the challenges were greater than anticipated and large bodies of plaster easily fell to the ground. Protective measures, including a plastic tent, were implemented to contain the dusty work, revealing the hidden complexities beneath the surface.

What followed was the removal of damp and rotten timber, the unveiling of original brickwork, and the intricate reconstruction of architectural curves.

From the initial dismantling to the plastering and finishing touches, every step of the making good process kick-started an understanding in timber health.

As the wall was replastered, attention turned to other areas facing similar issues. From the upper balcony to the archway, where water ingress had left its mark, remedial works were already in progress.
