MAIN AUDITORIUM REAR Bar

Over time, water ingress took its toll on the wall behind the beloved Organ Bar installation in the Main Auditorium, which has been a centrepiece since Hidden Door 2017.

Due to the investigations, we unfortunately had to remove the installation from the wall. To learn more about the piece, from its inception to removal, watch our organ bar film here.

Working alongside McFadyen’s preservation, we identified the Organ Bar as a prime area affected by prolonged water damage. Upon dismantling the organ pieces from the walls and ceiling, we had to address the compromised plaster to inspect the underlying timber.

Upon removal, it became clear that the timber had suffered extensive water exposure, leading to wet rot.

This deterioration compromised the structural integrity of the plasterwork, necessitating immediate attention to the timber.

Despite the challenges, we were able to salvage much of the timber structure, particularly the intricate curves between the wall and ceiling, through strategic treatment to prevent further decay.

With the timber secured and free from future issues, McFadyen’s proceeded to frame, sheet, and meticulously plaster the area, faithfully restoring the original curves of the building.

The final touch involved recreating the distinctive "fielded panel" on the wall, an ornate raised feature that adds depth and character to the space.

Though a significant amount of deteriorated material had to be removed (accompanied by its fair share of dust!), the process was thorough and necessary to ensure the longevity of the area.

With the underlying water ingress matter resolved, the area is now structurally sound and poised to endure for decades to come.
