Garden & surrounding areas

At the entrance to Thomas Morton Hall, you'll find a vibrant and lush green space that adds a touch of nature's beauty to our building.

This colourful garden welcomes everyone with its array of herbaceous plants, and its care and development over the years has told a more important story for us all season. We are open, alive, loved and cared for!

During the pandemic, our garden served as a safe and essential meeting space, providing a place for gathering, tending, and connecting with nature.

From April 2022 to September 2023, when the food poverty charity Empty Kitchens Full Hearts operated from Thomas Morton Hall, our garden supplied fresh herbs and seasonings daily.

Our garden is more than just a green space; it's a place where friendships and networks flourish. A dedicated group of long-standing volunteers, alongside the Leith Theatre staff, care for the garden. This shared effort has fostered a love for gardening and strengthened our community bonds.

The ever-changing seasons and new plantings ensure there is always something new to share on social media, keeping our gardening story alive and engaging.

The knowledge and confidence gained through our gardening efforts have also enabled us to extend our care to the wider grounds of the venue.

Recently, our garden served as a picturesque backdrop for BBC1’s The Bidding Room, providing a beautiful setting for filming and crew activities.

Gardening is hard work, but our small wellbeing space is a vital part of Leith Theatre’s presentation and operation, often enjoyed with a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
