THE BIDDING ROOM'S LEITH THEATRE TV DEBUT

Filming of The Bidding Room, April 2023

Transport yourself back to the radiant days of summer in June 2022, where Leith was looking spectacular as we basked in glorious sunshine during a spell of extraordinary weather. In the midst of this picturesque scene, Leith Theatre was experiencing its own moment of glory as it played host to the full production crew of BBC One’s beloved series, The Bidding Room.

For almost three months, we had the privilege of being home to this much-loved show, embracing a talented team of experts, designers and crew who brought our historic theatre to the centre of their stage.

Reflecting on that period through the lens of our memories and countless captured moments on camera, it feels as though it was just yesterday. Now, the excitement is palpable as series 5 prepares to grace screens across the nation. That’s right, our little treasure of a building will air on a TV near you this week!

Opening our doors to new friendships, we discovered kindred spirits who shared our passion for heritage, history and the preservation of precious items. Who could forget the tales of peculiar treasures arriving, shared breakfasts under the sun, and the lovely stories flooding social media, all celebrating the magic happening at Leith Theatre.

Led by the affable Nigal Havers, The Bidding Room team made a huge impression on us, as Leith and Edinburgh left an equally profound impression on them. Their time here was dappled with tales of festivals attended, culinary delights at local restaurants and crew day trips exploring the best Lothian has to offer.

For us it was also a time of learning as we navigated the intricacies of hosting a well-oiled production machine running at full speed, while immersing ourselves in the vibrant tapestry of creative industry talent. Each day brought fresh challenges, met with solutions found with creativity and collaboration.

As anticipation builds for the airing of series 5 tomorrow, we can’t wait to see how much of the theatre will be recognised on screen. This coverage will help share our story and showcase Leith’s rich heritage to a wider audience. From the comfort of your living rooms, you’ll glimpse the familiar sights of Leith Theatre. And who can resist the intrigue of the bidding process? Lots of the footage was behind closed doors for us, so what ever did happen to that remarkable piece tucked away in our loggia? Did they sell it?

Over the last few years, film and television production have played a vital role in our journey, aiding our efforts to revitalise the theatre as we conduct essential building repairs that protect the building’s longevity. Being home to The Bidding Room boosts our visibility and raises our profile, sharing our commitment to preserving the heritage that secures Leith Theatre for future generations.

We absolutely loved hosting this production and are honoured to be the new home for series 5. So, mark your calendars and join us in welcoming Leith Theatre to your screens, airing daily from Wednesday 6 March on BBC One at 15:45.

Is it too early to raise a glass? Well, as they say, it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere. Cheers to Leith, to heritage and to the magic of television!
